At Complexions Spa, Owner Denise DuBois Brings A Holistic Approach To Her Processes
If beauty were only skin deep, innovative professional aesthetician Denise Dubois would have had no need to evolve her day spa into Complexions Spa for Beauty and Wellness.

“The foundation of the business has always been skin care,” said Dubois. “Originally, Complexions occupied 1,200 square feet and had four facial rooms. Besides me there was one other employee who did make-up and answered the phone.”

PRE- AND PROBIOTICS: NEW SKINCARE DARLINGS OR PASSING FADS?
Humans are essentially walking petri dishes, harboring billions of bacteria in our gastrointestinal systems. “When this bacteria is in balance, our body functions amazingly well,” says Kristina Santoro, esthetician and wellness coach at Complexions Spa for Beauty and Wellness in Albany, New York. “However, internal imbalances caused by environmental toxins, processed foods, stress and drugs (such as antibiotics) create an overgrowth of bad bacteria. Five questions for Denise Dubois
1 How did you get started in the Spa industry?
I trained to become an esthetician at the Catherine E. Hinds School of Esthetics, the first accredited esthetics school in the country. Upon graduation in 1987, I opened Complexions Spa at 221 Wolf Road with a mission of providing the finest procedures and therapies using the best, natural ingredients in a beautiful, serene environmentally friendly setting. Through my work with dermatologists, I wanted to incorporate a medical perspective combined with a focus on beauty and health. I also worked with plastic surgeons first developing pre and post care programs. Our spa offers traditional spa services with medical treatments available, all performed by passionate and caring, licensed professionals who Pamper with a Purpose®. For nearly 30 years, we’ve been helping clients feel and look their very best.

A “Uniquely Saratoga” Spa Experience
When you’re spending 40 hours a week, often more, typing away at a desk, your body feels every minute of it. Your back strains and your neck tightens, as your hands begin to ache from the repetitive motion. The truth is, that while we’re busy going about our day jobs, our bodies are paying for it.
But a little pampering and some targeted relaxation can ease the pain, and go a long way toward refreshing our mental and physical health. With that in mind, I stopped by Complexions on Broadway to try out two uniquely Saratoga spa treatments that incorporate one of the area’s prized assets: its mineral springs.

Spa Treatments: Oxygen Manicures/Pedicures
The next frontier in oxygen-based spa treatments? Nail services!
“Oxygenated water—H20 that boasts additional, pressurized oxygen—has made quite a splash on the hydrotherapy scene in recent years. Considering this fluid purportedly increases blood flow, circulation and hydration, and naturally absorbs into deeper layers of skin than does regular ol’ water, it’s no wonder that savvy spa pros have uncovered its potential to up the wellness ante of the typical mani/pedi, too.
In 2009, Denise Dubois moved her Albany, New York-based business, Complexions Day Spa, into a larger location and installed an oxygenating water system. Dubois made widespread use of her oxygenator, and soon began marketing her facials, soaks, Vichy and pedicure offerings around the use of ‘healing waters’…”

“Men remain in the minority of day spa clients, yet they spend more, according to a recent spa industry trend report. Plus, they’re steadily proving more loyal than their female counterparts. So, it continues to behoove spa owners to court and win over the male of the species. But how? It’s not enough for spa owners to slap the word “man” onto a treatment description and call it a day…”

NY Complexions Spa Takes LEED Gold
There’s a new, state-of-the-art green spa that just opened its doors in Albany, New York. Complexions Spa & Salon, owned by Denise Dubois, received LEED Gold certification in May 2009, and the owner shared her excitement on her blog, A Green Spa. Denise tells an interesting story. Rather than pay someone else (i.e., the consultants) to obtain certification, as a small business owner, she recruited her family to help pick the right strategies and to document the points. And despite the daunting amount of paperwork required, she was able to get it done, making it an enormously rewarding experience. …
