Denise Dubois, owner of Complexions Spa, offers her expert advice on how to achieve younger, healthier looking skin today!

As an esthetician for more than 30 years, I’m often asked, “What can I do to take better care of my skin?” Especially after the summer season comes to a close and we have all spent hours outdoors enjoying all the season has to offer, people are looking to repair the damage that has been done over the last several months. The answer isn’t that difficult…click here to download full article (PDF)

“After a day of indulging in wine at the racetrack, I needed to detox and invigorate my skin. I headed to Complexions Spa for Beauty & Wellness, located in downtown Saratoga for a Mineral Balneotheraby Bath and a Nourishing & Re-balancing Facial. Saratoga is known for its spas, there are tons and I love that, however, Complexions offer’s an experience that tops all others. Their staff are experts in their field and focus on customizing the experience to your needs. In addition, they are the first spa in the United States to be Gold LEED certified, meaning they are “green”. Complexions Spa is powered by wind and water sources in the Adirondacks and the facility is made of recyclable, renewable and sustainable materials. You can feel good about getting a spa treatment here knowing you’re reducing your environmental footprint on the local town.”

1 How did you get started in the Spa industry?

I trained to become an esthetician at the Catherine E. Hinds School of Esthetics, the first accredited esthetics school in the country. Upon graduation in 1987, I opened Complexions Spa at 221 Wolf Road with a mission of providing the finest procedures and therapies using the best, natural ingredients in a beautiful, serene environmentally friendly setting. Through my work with dermatologists, I wanted to incorporate a medical perspective combined with a focus on beauty and health. I also worked with plastic surgeons first developing pre and post care programs. Our spa offers traditional spa services with medical treatments available, all performed by passionate and caring, licensed professionals who pamper with a purpose. For nearly 30 years, we’ve been helping clients feel and look their very best.

When you’re spending 40 hours a week, often more, typing away at a desk, your body feels every minute of it. Your back strains and your neck tightens, as your hands begin to ache from the repetitive motion. The truth is, that while we’re busy going about our day jobs, our bodies are paying for it.

But a little pampering and some targeted relaxation can ease the pain, and go a long way toward refreshing our mental and physical health. Spa Treatments: Oxygen Manicures/Pedicures The next frontier in oxygen-based spa treatments? Nail services!

“Oxygenated water—H20 that boasts additional, pressurized oxygen—has made quite a splash on the hydrotherapy scene in recent years. Considering this fluid purportedly increases blood flow, circulation and hydration, and naturally absorbs into deeper layers of skin than does regular ol’ water, it’s no wonder that savvy spa pros have uncovered its potential to up the wellness ante of the typical mani/pedi, too.

In 2009, Denise Dubois moved her Albany, New York-based business, Complexions Day Spa, into a larger location and installed an oxygenating water system. Dubois made widespread use of her oxygenator, and soon began marketing her facials, soaks, Vichy and pedicure offerings around the use of ‘healing waters’…”

Complexions is a word derived from the Latin word “complexi”, referring to the balance of the body’s temperatures, and Complexions is a spa that wants to create a whole body wellness experience…”

“How many steps per day does the average American take? A study conducted by pedometer researcher Catrine Tudor-Locke, PhD, and published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise in 2004, showed a wide variation in the 200 women and men who participated. The men in the survey took an average of 7,192 steps per day and the women in the survey took an average of 5,210 steps per day

The average person endures several hundred pounds of pressure on the feet on a daily basis, and walks four times the circumference of the Earth in a lifetime…”

“Men remain in the minority of day spa clients, yet they spend more, according to a recent spa industry trend report. Plus, they’re steadily proving more loyal than their female counterparts. So, it continues to behoove spa owners to court and win over the male of the species. But how? It’s not enough for spa owners to slap the word “man” onto a treatment description and call it a day…”

“…Salons of the Year judging took place in three phases. First, SALON TODAY editors and designers reviewed each of the entries, including essays and photography. Next, a panel of editors and art directors evaluated each entry in further detail, selecting a group of finalists. Finally, the panel of expert judges scrutinized essays and evaluated seven to 10 images from the finalists, scoring them in five different décor categories. Judges’ scores were combined and used to determine the grand-prize winner, the runners up, and the Salons of Distinction. On May 19, Complexions became the first salon in Albany, NY to win this amazing honor…”

It can still be difficult to lure men to the spa, but more and more male athletes are making the services part of their routines. Take the retired Hall-of-Famer and ESPY-winning jockey Jose Santos, who recently stopped by Complexions Spa for Beauty and Wellness in Albany, New York. It was the middle of the thoroughbred horse racing season at the nearby Saratoga Race Course, and Santos – the 11th all-time winning jockey – brought along fellow jockey Filiberto Leon for a steam shower, hot shave, massage, haircut and men’s manicure.

About JETSON Green Magazine

There’s a new, state-of-the-art green spa that just opened its doors in Albany, New York. Complexions Spa & Salon, owned by Denise Dubois, received LEED Gold certification in May 2009, and the owner shared her excitement on her blog, A Green Spa. Denise tells an interesting story. Rather than pay someone else (i.e., the consultants) to obtain certification, as a small business owner, she recruited her family to help pick the right strategies and to document the points. And despite the daunting amount of paperwork required, she was able to get it done, making it an enormously rewarding experience. …
